Current (January 2010) Butler Rubin Diversity Statistics:
- 30% of our equity partners are women
- 5% of our equity partners are minority persons
- 20% of our associates are women
- One of four Management Committee members is a woman and our Marketing Director is a woman
- Out of our last 10 associate and paralegal hires, 50% have been women and minorities
- We are currently working with minority-focused recruiters
- We are sponsoring a $10,000 annual scholarship for law students that gives priority to diverse candidates
As a law firm, our goal is to create a diverse partnership, professional and administrative staff – each of whom participates in pro bono and community activities. In this way, we believe Butler Rubin will create excellence in serving our clients, our communities and ourselves.
Meeting our goal keeps our focus on fostering 1) diversity, 2) pro bono activities and 3) community involvement.
The Small- to Mid-Size Law Firm Diversity Initiative and the MCCA
Small- to mid-size law firms face reported hurdles in achieving work force diversity. To address the challenges, Butler Rubin approached the Minority Corporate Counsel Association and developed the "Small to Mid-Size Law Firm Diversity Initiative" in 2003. The Initiative is a means to evidence a firm's commitment to diversity as it works toward achieving numbers in its ranks. It sets out tangible objectives for each signatory firm, including contributions to a minority scholarship fund. Click here to see this commitment. Butler Rubin is proud to be a signatory to The Chicago Bar Association's Diversity Initiative (2006).
To ensure commitment, accountability and creativity in approaching its diversity objectives, Butler Rubin partner Karen Borg has been named the firm's Diversity Partner.
Women and the Reinsurance Industry
In May 2004, three female partners in our reinsurance practice group developed and held a first-of-its-kind program called, "Women in Reinsurance," a program devoted to issues that women face in the reinsurance industry. The program included a survey of women in the industry that gathered information about challenges these women have faced because of gender and has spurred both interest and a number of ongoing follow-up activities that we hope will provide women in the industry with a forum for expressing their views and a means to implement change.
This program continues each year. For information on our current WIR programming, please go to www.womeninreinsurance.com or send an email to Andrea Gordon, Director of Marketing and Client Service, at agordon@butlerrubin.com.
