Experience: Doug serves his corporate clients as lead counsel with respect to a wide range of commercial disputes, including those involving allegations of fraud, fraudulent transfer, misrepresentation, interference with business opportunity, unfair business practices, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of fiduciary duty, breach of restrictive covenants, and breach of contracts, including employment agreements and insurance and reinsurance contracts. He draws upon 20 years of litigation and arbitration experience.

Doug has been recognized as a leading lawyer in reinsurance litigation in the 2009 and 2010 editions of Chambers USA - America's Leading Lawyers for Business and as a leader in insurance law in the 2011 edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Representative Matters:
  • Recovered over $45 million on behalf of a corporate client whose business “partner” refused to pay contractual obligations and brought counterclaims alleging misrepresentation, bad faith, breach of contract, and failure to properly supervise the activities of an agent.
  • Recovered over $25 million on behalf of a large corporation, notwithstanding allegations of misrepresentation and breach of contract. The dispute involved the interpretation of complex agreements covering the client’s purchase of a large piece of business.
  • Successfully defended a company in disputes concerning business interruption losses and defeated a motion in federal court for a preliminary injunction with respect to the client’s sale of certain assets.
  • Obtained summary judgment for a large corporate client in a dispute involving the client’s purchase of a business, in which the purchase agreements required the ongoing cooperation of the seller.
  • Successfully litigated numerous disputes concerning the enforceability of an arbitration provision in the contracts between the parties.
  • Obtained two judgments (one in arbitration; one in court) against a South American company that refused to pay its obligations under various contracts, and then defeated an appeal to the Seventh Circuit based on sovereign immunity theories.
  • Successfully defended reinsurer where primary issues were whether construction defect policies were written outside the scope of the reinsurance agreement and whether settlements were made and allocated reasonably.
  • Successfully defended a large insurance company’s allocation of losses incurred with respect to silicone breast implant claims to multiple policies across numerous policy years.
  • Represented a large insurance company in recovering nearly $50 million from reinsurers with respect to lawyers’ professional liability policies issued by a managing general agency.

Bar Admissions: Doug is admitted to practice in Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Community Involvement: Doug serves as the President of the Parish Council for St. Thomas the Apostle Church in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, a post he has held for 5 years. He also serves the parish by leading a weekly adult education meeting, and by guiding the parish’s Youth Group for teenagers.
